Sad News

I waited to post this because I didn’t want to bum anyone out on Christmas.

Delta didn’t make it home. Edited 12/29 to add a link to Delta's Dogster page

She wasn’t my dog, so it really isn’t my place to eulogize her. But I did want to thank the folks that commented on my previous post, say a few words and post a few pictures I took when I was in Oxford back in late June.

Bill called me on Christmas Eve, about three hours after I had posted asking for happy thoughts for Delta's return home. He had found her that morning, dead. She had a run-in with a trio of local pit bulls and came out on the bad end. The Sheriff is aware of the dogs, but local laws mean that there’s nothing that can be done, since the pit bulls took down a dog, not a human.

I only met Delta on that one visit, but I’ve been hearing all about her since I met Bill in March of 2005.

Some people don’t understand how much a part of a family a pet can be. But I know a fair number of my readers are “animal people” and understand.

She was an awesome dog. Here’s hoping she didn’t suffer too much and is in a better place. And that Bill and Jackson (his other dog) will soon be able to remember more of the happy times they had with Delta than the horribly sad way they lost her.

Bill checks in here very occasionally, so I’m going to let him know I’ve posted this so he doesn't get surprised. If you want to leave any messages for him, please feel free to comment and I’ll make sure he sees them, when he’s ready.

Sending a hug for Bill. It's hard to lose a beloved animal, especially in that senseless way. You have to hang on to the good memories and let go of the bad, and trust that she's in a better place waiting for you.

I'll ditto the big hug for Bill. I can't imagine losing my dog. I don't WANT to imagine losing my dog and to have a dog meet that fate...I'm just so sorry and I wish things had turned out for the better. I think I'll go hug Rufus now.

(I'm slightly out of the loop, been away and still trying to catch up.)

oh, no. :( I'm so sorry to hear that. More big hugs for Bill. I couldn't bear to lose my animals (although I know it is an eventuality).

I'm so sorry to hear about Delta. What a very sad way to go. Just shaking my head that nothing can be done.

Wishing Bill warm thoughts and good memories.

I am so, so sorry! This is just an awful thing to happen, but at the very least it's good to know that Delta was so loved. Hugs to Bill.

So said to hear about Delta. The laws just aren't right. What would have happened if there were a small child with Delta? It's time to change those backwards laws. The whole thing is just so cruel. My heart goes out to Bill.

I have 2 chihuahua's and can't even imagine losing them this way. Laws everywhere need to be changed to make the penalty for senseless killing of animals much closer to those of "humans". My thoughts and prayers to Bill.

I'm sorry to hear about Delta. She sounds like she was a great dog. Pets like that always hold a special place in our hearts. I'm sure that she will continue to in yours.

My heart is heavy. My thoughts are with Bill and Jackson. Only time can help with the heartbreak Bill feels. My 8 yr old pug was attack last January by a "friendly" pit mix. The heartache is almost unbearable and my little one survived. Bill, I'm keeping you in my prayers and Jackson too.

Thank you so much everyone for the kind words and well wishes. Jackson and I are making it, as is the rest of my family. Hopefully I can get some changes made locally for the future. We'll see and I'll keep Amy posted. Thanks again.
